31. Earthside: Elijah’s Story

On a calm evening in Michigan, as the sun set over a crisp November sky, a gentle stir of excitement and anticipation filled the air. It was Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, when I received a text from Alyssa. She shared she was experiencing dull, rhythmic back pains that danced in and out every few minutes. Unsure if this marked the beginning of labor, she reached out for guidance. Across the globe in Australia, the early hours of her Thursday morning carried a sense of quiet expectation.

I encouraged her to trust her body, rest, and nourish herself. These sensations were her body’s way of preparing for the miraculous journey ahead. As the day unfolded, Alyssa continued to navigate the surges with grace. Despite the consistency of her waves, they remained mild, allowing her to move freely, rest deeply, and lean into her intuition.

By Friday morning, November 15th, Alyssa woke refreshed, having slept soundly through the night. The rhythmic surges remained steady but grew in intensity. Her husband, Michael, lovingly supported her every step, setting up the birth tub, preparing nourishing drinks, and offering unwavering prayer. Together, they moved through early labor with a beautiful balance of patience and surrender, knowing that each contraction brought them closer to meeting their baby.

As evening approached, the contractions deepened in strength. Alyssa shifted positions, embraced the soothing waters of the tub, and found moments of stillness between the waves. Her labor, while long and steady, carried an undercurrent of peace and divine strength. At times, she rested and even napped, conserving her energy for what lay ahead. Her body, in its wisdom, worked to bring baby into an optimal position.

The early hours of Saturday, November 16th, marked a shift. Alyssa’s waters released with a gentle gush, signaling a new phase of labor. Her contractions intensified, bringing a crescendo of vocal expressions as her body leaned fully into the process. Alyssa labored with primal grace, vocalizing through each wave as her baby descended.

By mid-morning, the unmistakable signs of transition were evident. Alyssa began feeling the urge to bear down, her body working instinctively to guide her baby into the world. With Michael’s steady presence and whispered prayers, she navigated the powerful surges, roaring with the strength of a mother on the brink of meeting her child.

As the Australian afternoon wrapped its warmth around their home, Alyssa’s baby crowned, retreating briefly before moving forward again. With courage and determination, Alyssa embraced the intensity, feeling every sensation as her baby’s head emerged into her hands. Her joy and awe were palpable as they exclaimed, “He’s got a full head of hair!”

At 11:53 AM, Alyssa gave one final roar of triumph as her baby was born into the water. The room filled with the sweet sound of their baby’s first cries, gurgling softly as Michael gently lifted him to Alyssa’s chest. The sacred moment was one of profound love and gratitude as they welcomed their son earthside.

The next hours were filled with warmth and reverence. Alyssa rested in the glow of her baby’s first latch, feeling the rhythmic tightening of afterbirth contractions. Together, they gave thanks for the safe arrival of their child. With gentle encouragement and faith, the placenta was birthed, completing the physical journey.

As Michael prayed over Alyssa’s body, his words a balm of love and gratitude, the sacredness of their experience was undeniable. This birth was not just a moment but a testament to the power of surrender, trust, and divine grace—a story woven with strength, resilience, and the eternal bond between mother, father, and child.
